Masters - Captains - Skippers
 

 

The information below is not a definative guide. It's a rough guide to what skills and experience is needed. The salaries mentioned are not set in stone they are only approximations. The higher salaries relate to the more experienced and qualified crewmembers.

  Qualifications & Experience Needed  
   
  • Captain's License (appropriate to size and flag of vessel)
  • The Captain who usually deals with all shore and port official
  • The Captain also makes sure that proper logs and official paper work is maintained and completed
  • References and relevant paperwork
  • Previous e xperience as Captain
  • Knowledge of repairs, refits and boat yard work
  • Knowledge of all responsibilities of different crewing positions from deckhand to engineer
  • Understanding of computers and accounting skills
  • Personnel management skills & ability to manage crew under his or her command
  • W ork history with previous vessel owners, crew and marine industry professionals
  • Knowledge and understanding of latest rules and regulations regarding the running of a vessel

 

  Summary  
   
  • A Captains main duty is the safe manning and operation of his or her vessel.
  • Captains have the responsibility of managing the crew as well as the vessel.
  • Captains are responsible for the vessels accounting.
  • Captains manage the upkeep of the vessel.
  • Captains are responsible for repairs and boat yard visits and answer to the owner with regard to all decisions made on the vessel.
  • Captains act as host to guests and visiting vessels/crew.
  • In some cases a Captain may also assume a dual role of Captain and Engineer. A Captain must have knowledge of engines in these cases and must be able to trouble shoot, repair and maintain equipment onboard. On small vessels, the more hands-on a Captain needs to be.
  • Captains must be familiar with overall safety codes and the safety training of all crewmembers.

 

  Captains Salary Guidelines and Vessel Sizes  
   

Master 120 ft to 200 ft Plus
$6,000 - $16,000 + (Approx. per month)
10 years experience as Captain

Captain 100 ft to 160 ft
$5,000 - $12,000 + (Approx. per month)
5 years experience as Captain

Captain - 1st Mate 60 ft to 110 ft
$3,500 - $7,000 + (Approx. per month)
2 years experience as Captain or 1st Mate/Officer
